I love the beginning of the month, it’s like I can forget whatever happened in a month before…
But the real reason for me loving the beginning of the month is because I get my check! woohoo!!!
So… here’s the math:
check = money = hardwork being paid = reward myself = get to eat great food = go to great places for lunch
So this time, we’ve decided to go to Alley Cat. This is not the first time we’ve been there, I’ve been there once. A little hidden hideaway restaurant, hence the name, ‘alley’… located in Pppies 2 Lane, quite a busy lane in Legian area, but if you don’t pay attention to the sign, you’ll miss this place,
The first time I went there, I had to try their “Monster Grill”, which apparently, is the smallest portion of the monster meals. It consists of 350g of tender steak, a generous portion of home made fries, and a large bowl of home made onion rings. Oh, don’t forget a large bowl of gravy to go with your steak.
Honestly, the taste of the steak is just normal. Like any other great steak place, nothing really special about it. But the portion probably is the one that almost pop your eyes out. It’s huge!! The first time I ate there, I could only finish 1/3 of the portion, and my two male buddies helped me out finished the whole thing, with so much hard work! I must say, for a Rp. 70K (about US$7.5), you get a really great deal!
There were many things that we tried after the second visit. We never really wanted to try the monster mixed grill, but a friend of mine insisted in ordering that. This meal that cost Rp.100K (US$11) comes with a total of 1.7kg meat! that include, beef, pork, chicken, sausages, and bacon… and an egg. Oh… with(again) a very large serving of fries and onion rings. If you could finish that you’ll be in their hall of fame along with all those crazy people who ‘killed’ that monster. As we expected, my friend who ordered that couldn’t finish it all by himself, and he is a large man, he had to share it with another large dude. And, again, as we expected, they both turned stupid after eating that, they were very content, and could barely move!
Me, of course, learning from my first experience, I ordered a monster with onion baguette, I was pretty much prepared for the worst… yes… almost a meter long baguette filled with sauteed onion, red and green pepper, and chunks of tender meat, serve with large portion of home made fries. It was enough for me to eat a quarter of the sandwich, while my partner had to finish the rest, he had to work hard for that. The baguette was kinda chewy, although the sauteed onions and the chunks of meat was really great, still too much work.
He cut his sandwich into another 3 pieces, ate another quarter, and another…. comes to the last quarter of the sandwich, he was about to die! So.. we had to give that part, to the two morons who were dying after eating the mixed monster grill. And they finished it off!
I was pondering whether their stomachs were really made up of latex…. hmmm…
So anyway…. the whole service is nice, the waitress was very keen, she kept asking us whether we were okay, and we could only answer with a nod or a head shake. It was a little slow though… but then again, you are already warned that “Good things come to those who wait, and if you want fast food, please ask direction to McDonalds”.
There are many things that we can recommend, including their curry, that comes with levels of spiciness. The hottest one would be the level where you have to ask direction to Bangli, apparently in Bangli, there’s the biggest asylum in Bali. Also, you must try their potato skin. We love it! The skin is very crispy, it comes in 3 flavours, cheesy, mexican, and vegetarian. They’re really addictive. There are other appetizer, such as deep fried camembert that you must try, and this one the pate, it’s good, but I don’t eat pork, I accidentally ate it. And once is enough for me.
Well, I had that for lunch today, at around 2 pm, now it’s 10 pm, and my stomach is still very very full…
Concluding my lunch for today…. Always come to Alley Cat when you’re really hungry, and always bring at least one friend, to help you out finish off your meal or just to carry you in case you get food stroke. It’s a good place to visit once in a while, especially while your financial situation is really good, (according to me a good affordable lunch should never cost more than 20K). Please give a tip, because if the waitress don’t get one, they’ll give sarcastic comment in Balinese or Bahasa, meaning that they don’t get lunch money, it’s a little rude. But, you can always be like us, pretending not to hear any single comment from the dam* waitress, and go home with a smiley face and overloaded stomach
Btw, here’s the picture of the onion baguette with the monster grill, notice the size comparing to my handphone?? Or you can just see that they don’t have any plate that’s long enough for the sandwich. Our photographer, Rio had to stand on his toes to take this one.
